Among the many topological methods emploed in analysis,
cohomological index theories and Lusternik-Schnirelmann category are useful
tools in obtaining the "size" of the set of critical points of a
functional. For certain differential equations, Nielsen fixed point theory
can be applicable in giving a lower bound for the number of solutions. In
this talk, I will give a brief introduction to these topological techniques.
